CAP BOARD OF GOVERNORS CANDIDATE, 2020
Proven experience to meet member needs
I am a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. I have had both community practice (5 years) and academic (16 years) experience. I am currently Chair of the Division of Clinical Core Laboratory Services (core lab, esoteric testing, stat labs, physician office labs, point of care testing). I served for 15 years as Program Director or Associate Program Director of our pathology residency at Mayo. In my role as Program Director and through my involvement in laboratory accreditation, I have brought dozens of residents and fellows on laboratory inspections. I have seen how participating in laboratory inspections makes the value of CAP clear to the next generation of pathologists. As chair of the Continuous Compliance Committee, I set requirements for proficiency testing (PT) providers to participate in the Laboratory Accreditation Program, and audited every CAP-accepted PT provider. My in-depth knowledge of PT program operations will allow me to improve the value of PT testing for labs and ensure that the CAP PT program continues to generate revenue needed for CAP to serve its members. As a board member I want to engage residents and fellows in CAP activities, improve the value of PT testing, and advocate for fair payment for pathology services. I would be honored to serve on the board of governors to help secure the future for CAP and our profession.

I served as vice-chair of the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation, the body charged with direct oversight and management of LAP. I am now a member of the Council on Accreditation.
